Eel throwing competitions, celebrity chefs, food markets, music, dancing and more across the May Bank Holiday weekend.
This May bank holiday weekend Ely will be hosting the 2015 Eel Festival.
It's a weekend of great family events taking place in the centre of Ely, featuring:
- "Ellie the Eel" Eel Day Parade
- The World Eel Throwing Competition
- A Town Criers Championship
- Huge Food and Drink Market
- Celebrity Chef Demos
- Live Music

The Festival kicks off on Friday 1st May and runs through the Bank Holiday finishing on Monday 4th May.

Friday 1st May | Eel Food Safari Running throughout the weekend, a variety of restaurants, cafés and food venues will be embracing the Eel Festival Weekend by providing special festival dishes/menus using eel or an eel theme e.g eel shaped biscuits, slippery eel cocktail etc. So if you have never sampled the delights of tasting eel, this is your chance! City Centre Eel Throwing Competition Join in the fun from 11am and see Ely's City Centre retailers and businesses battle it out to be crowned "City Centre Eel Throwing Business of the Year". |
Saturday 2nd May | Ely's Eel Day Starting with a procession through the city headed up by Ellie the Eel – a giant version of the snake-like fish. Music is provided by Ely’s Samba Band. The procession snakes through the city, along Waterside and arrives at the Jubilee Gardens. Once there, you can compete in Eel Throwing, and tuck into smoked and jellied eels washed down by a special Eel Day brew. There's also a hog-roast, pizza and loads of other food if eel isn't your thing. The procession – and the day’s events – start at 10.30 at Cross Green, which is next to Ely Cathedral. |

Celebrity Chef Line Up
The line up of celebrity and local chefs for this year’s Ely’s Food and Drink Festival as part of the Eel Festival is now complete.
Joining Valentine Warner, the renowned food writer and cook who's opening the event on Sunday 3rd May, will be Jean-Christophe Novelli, the 5 out of 5 AA Rosette and Michelin award winning chef, and Alex Rushmer the Master Chef finalist and owner of the Hole in the Wall.
The three famous chefs will be joined by a variety of experts showcasing their skills and passing on their knowledge in the G’s Fresh Cookery Theatre Demonstration Area.
