Golden Hour Blonde Is The Sunset Shade That We're Obsessed With

Golden hour blonde is one of the prettiest hair colour trends to catch our attention (and the light just right) and it's literally perfect for summer.

The shade takes its cue from our favourite natural phenomenon. We've said it before and we'll say it again, golden hour is the most beautiful time of the day – just as the sun rises and sets – when everything is soaked in the most mesmerising sun-kissed warmth. It's that dreamy period where everything is beautifully illuminated in a golden glow.

Golden hour blonde follows the same theory, only silky golden tones are carefully lit throughout your strands to give your hair a permanent golden hour filter that makes it look like it's sunkissed whatever the weather.

We've been spotting it everywhere, and with the weather warming up, its the best time for the glowy shade to glitter in the sunlight, plus its a gorgeous complement to sunkissed summer skin tones.

It's a shade that's heavy on feel-good vibes, too. “This summer, we've noticed people tending to embrace warmer, richer tones that are nourishing and optimistic,” explains Jordanna Cobella, Cobella salon owner and Wella Professionals Digital Craft Expert. “We're seeing this trend transfer across to hair, with clients embracing warm golden honeycomb tones,” she adds.

It's good news for darker hair colours since the shade is gentler on strands than stand-out platinum, and it works well with a root smudge for more seamless root regrowth. Where bleached blonde feels ultra fresh and crisp, golden blonde hair feels soft, relaxed and romantic.

Technically speaking, the colour is more reflective and therefore illuminating, too. “The beige blonde trend has embraced a warmer palette with highs and lows of nude, beige, and sandy tones. These warmer tones tend to reflect light more than ashier hues, so will help the appearance of shine on the hair,” Jordanna explains, so these are the shades to ask your hair colourist for.

The warm sandy shades also help to serve up beachy vibes, even if you're staying in the city, and the mix of different tones makes it easy to personalise to your own bespoke golden hour blend.

As for at-home upkeep, “the Wella Professionals Color Fresh Mask has a gorgeous palette of shades, and the Golden Gloss mask (£11.81) is perfect for those looking to add some glow and warmth to their hair in-between salon treatments,” recommends Jordanna.  But in general, nourishing masks, oils and shine treatments will bring the best out of beautiful hair colour and light up golden tones.

And if you want to keep the golden glow going, golden hour skin is the makeup secret the pros swear by, so you can incorporate it into your makeup routine. Give complexions a golden hour glow-up with illuminating highlighters, sparkly eyeshadows and glossy lips.
