The Rainy British Weather Is Wreaking Havoc With Our Hair

Struggling with this incessant rain? Of course you are. A few weeks ago it was all sunshine and picnics. Now it's grey skies and torrential downpours. While our summer plans have certainly taken a hit following the dismal weather, it's our hair that has undoubtedly taken the brunt of it. You see, the combination of warm weather and wet conditions has resulted in extreme levels of humidity that is causing frizziness and wreaking havoc with our hair styling. At team GLAMOUR, we're all about embracing your beauty, your way. So, if fluffy or frizzy hair doesn't bother you, that's your hair prerogative (hairogative?) – but if you're after some tips for styling rain-dampened strands, read on.
So, what's the deal with humidity? And why does it hate our hair so much?
Put simply, humidity is the amount of moisture in the air. Too much moisture can breaks down the hydrogen bonds in our hair, causing the strands to swell and dry in a wavy, misshapen way.
"Moisture flux in the hair is actually the very cause of frizz," says Michael Shaun Corby, Global Creative Director of Living Proof. "Your outer layer of hair absorbs moisture (especially in a humid environment) which causes hair to swell." According to the Met Office, we're currently experiencing humidity of over 80%, which is causing an unprecedented level of frizz.

If you're not keen on embracing frizz, the best way to get rid of it (besides a hat) is to choose nourishing oils that cocoon each individual strand and protect it from absorbing any moisture from the air. "Try an at-home DIY hair mask for frizzy hair, which you can leave on for 10 minutes - 1 hour to restore the hair," advises Hari's Salon Creative Director, Craig Taylor.
Are there any DIY frizz remedies?
"Don't worry if you don't have hair treatments at home - you can make your own with a few pantry essentials: Coconut Oil, Argan Oil and Castor Oil are all great conditioning treatment alternatives. Argon Oil is especially excellent to hydrate and nourish the hair. It helps restore and smooth the cuticle and strengthens the hair by repairing damage to cuticle membranes, which helps to combat frizz." A healthy, strong hair cuticle means there's no gaps for the moisture to sneak into, reducing your chances of experiencing frizz no matter the weather.
Are there any long-term frizz treatments?
If your hair is particularly prone to frizz and you don't have the time or inclination to keep applying hair oils and nourishing masks, there is a long-term solution in the form of an in-salon keratin treatment (sometimes called a Brazilian blow dry).
The treatment involves applying a keratin formula to hair before sealing it with heat. It takes around 2-4 hours to apply, lasts for up to six months and costs £200 and up. As a result, hair is left shiny, nourishing and immune to frizz.
What about some frizz-resistant hair styles?
Once you've incorporated some strengthening and smoothing ingredients into your hair care regime, you can also take advantage of the hair styles and hacks that are great at safeguarding against frizz. A sleek top knot, slicked back pony tail or box braids are the best go-tos for all day long control, while a bunch of hair accessories or hair bands can help detract attention from fly aways.
