Julia Roberts dropped a 'pant size' while filming her first TV series, Homecoming.

The 50-year-old actress found her role as Heidi Bergman in the new Amazon Prime Original thriller required a lot of 'cardio acting' and multi-tasking that made her lose weight without even trying. 

'Yes it's called cardio acting and you carry a ton of stuff, talk on the phone, be in heels and be up and down the stairs all day. I went down a pant size which is true!' she told BANG Showbiz.

The series co-creator and director, Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot), added: 'It is true!'

Homecoming is based on Eli Horowitz, and Micah Bloomberg's popular serialized audio podcast and stars Julia as a small-town waitress, Heidi, who left her previous employment as a caseworker at a titular agency which helps soldiers rejoin civilian life.

The Academy Award-winning actress confessed her 'love' for thrillers and admitted she is a 'huge sucker' for plot twists in the genre, even when it's something she already knows is going to happen.

'I love that genre, we were talking before about Parallax View, just movies like that,' Roberts said. 'I've been lucky to be in some thriller genres, The Pelican Brief and Sleeping with the Enemy - those cupboards I mean that was something!

'So I do love stuff like that and I fall for it even when I know what's going to happen, I'm still like 'Oh my god the towels' so I'm a good sucker for those kinds of movies and I love the jagged edge, so I love that genre.'

Julia - who has three children, 13-year-old twins Phinnaeus and Hazel, and Henry, 11, with her cinematographer husband Daniel Moder - was attracted to the Amazon prime series because of the character's circumstances, rather than Heidi herself.

'Well interestingly this is a character that I picked because of the circumstances that surround her,' the Pretty Woman star explained. 

'I can't isolate her in any way, the way I sometimes can on other pieces of material where you can kind of imagine, 'OK well, what if we put her in this scenario' so we can understand her more fully,' she added.

Roberts added her character Heidi is, 'so intertwined with everything that's going on around her,' while marveling at the work by Sam Esmail, who co-created the series with Horowitz and Bloomberg, and directed all 10 episodes of the first season.

'Sam just turned it into this incredible... I mean I have never come to work and walked on to a set and just thought: "Wow this is incredible, this is amazing,''' the Wonder star said.

Homecoming also stars Bobby Cannavale, Stephan James, Sissy Spacek, Alex Karpovsky, Shea Whigham and Jeremy Allen White.

The show will be available to stream on Amazon Prime from 2 November.
