He had reportedly been under hospice care for a week. The Barney Miller star was first reported dead in an issue of People magazine in 1982, and the subject of his mortality became a long-running Hollywood joke in the years afterward, with Vigoda often joining David Letterman and Conan O’Brien to make fun of his supposed demise.
